Worth repeating: for anyone who needs warm shelter in NYC: https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-03702
I still have plans to meet some friends for late lunch in East Harlem this afternoon, unless someone decides it’s too cold to be out (I’m hoping it won’t be me). Until then, am headed out to the grocery store. Some might say I’m dressed “too nice” for errands, but whatever. I prefer to get dressed just once per day. Plus, I’m not interested in saving clothes for “occasions” that may never have happen.
This is a mix of secondhand (the button down, one of the long sleeve shirts, one of the pairs of leggings, and the burnt umber pants peeking out) and bought new at some point (Bel Kazan dress, white long sleeve shirt, Dickies thermal leggings, 3 pairs of socks, the Bogs Chelsea boots, and the belt custom made by a Greek leatherwork artist no longer on Etsy). When I leave, I’ll also be wearing a long Lands End winter puffy coat, a cap, and hood-bib I crocheted a few weeks ago. I hope I’ll be warm enough.

My friend is choosing the restaurant later, but we all agreed to choose from a Ghanaian, Ethiopian, or Somali restaurant. We are very lucky to live with such diversity in NYC and would likely have selected these cuisines anyway, not just because it’s Black History Month.
Since we’re talking about it, yes, one way to honor #BHM is through celebrating the foods, but another is to support the organizations that nurture the people. Here are some NYC orgs nurturing Black communities from the African diaspora to learn about and support:
***Afternoon Edit: we did cancel brunch ☹️. But likely best for general welfare. I did stay productive, and made a pot of turkey veggie-scrap soup, as well as ravioli & veg stir fry (no red sauce, just a bit of broth).
